About Shorewood Historical Society
Shorewood Historical Society
As a community grows so does its need to remember and record its history. In 1982, the Shorewood Village Board established an ad hoc committee to draft recommendations for the formation of an historical society. On May 4, 1984, the Shorewood Historical Society was officially established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The Society is an affiliate member of the Wisconsin Historical Society and the Wisconsin Council for Local History.
Mission and Initiatives
Our mission is to oversee projects that encourage village-wide historic preservation of the built environment and the collection and appropriate storage of donated materials related to Village history. Education efforts include programs, interpretive signs, walking tours and newsletters.
Our Board
A 15-member Board guides the all-volunteer organization. New Board members and officers are elected at the Annual Meeting of the Membership in the spring of each year. Board meetings are held bi-monthly. The organization is supported by membership dues, donations, fund raising projects and the Village of Shorewood (in-kind, including archives space and utilities).
Archive
Our primary archive is in the basement of the Village Hall. Collections are primarily paper records and pictures. Items directly related to Shorewood history are actively solicited from Village organizations and residents.
A second location, referred to as the Sheldon Room, is in the Village Center, lower level. All materials relevant to the history of Shorewood’s homes are housed here. A knowledgeable volunteer is available to help curious homeowners discover the history of their home.
Both the Sheldon Room and the Village Hall archives are open by appointment. Contact us for more information.
