Birthday Markers
Shorewood’s Birthday Markers are granite stones placed in front of homes to indicate the year the house was built. Walk through Shorewood neighborhoods, note the dates on the birthday markers and start to visualize when and how the neighborhood developed.
Note the dates, then check the home’s architecture. Pre-1900 will probably be farm-house style. A variety of revival styles were constructed in the 1920s. Were all the homes on a single block built about the same time? Or can you spot “fill-in” homes added in mid-century or later?
Use our Marker Map as a guide to locate the Birthday Markers. They are usually placed in the boulevard. 746 Shorewood homes have markers. The oldest is 1875 and the newest is 2001.
Birthday Markers were sold and installed by the Historical Society from 2017-2023. There are no current plans to repeat the sale as about a quarter of the Village is already marked.
