About Us
 |
A non-profit organization dedicated to the
discovery, collection and preservation of historical records, pictures and
objects that reflect the history of Shorewood. |
 |
A society chartered in 1984 in a village
that was originally known as East Milwaukee. The name was changed to
Shorewood in 1917. The village celebrated its centennial in the year 2000. |
 |
Affiliated with the Wisconsin Historical
Society, the Wisconsin Council for Local History and American Association
for State and Local History. |
 |
Restored ten murals depicting the history of
Milwaukee in the lobby of the Administration Building of Shorewood High
School. The murals were painted by Carl Van Treeck, Works Progress
Administration (WPA) artist, in the 1930s. |
 |
Hosted a Convention of the Wisconsin Council
for Local History in 1994. The theme of the meeting was the legacy of the
WPA. |
 |
Placed four historical markers as part of
the sesquicentennial of the State of Wisconsin in 1998. Marked are the
Village Hall, the National Guard Armory, formerly on Oakland Avenue,
Shorewood High School, and the old amusement park in the are now know as
Hubbard Park. |
 |
Published a pictorial history of Shorewood,
Images of America, Shorewood, Wisconsin, in 2000 as part of the Shorewood
centennial celebration. |
 |
Revised and published in booklet form in
2001, A Guide to Shorewood’s Architecture, six walking tours of Shorewood.
The booklet includes pictures, house information and a glossary of
architectural styles. |
 |
Opened a public research room, the Charles
T. Sheldon Room, in the new Shorewood Library and Village Center. Hours
are from 10-2 on Wednesday or by appointment. |
 |
Began to place the collection on computer
for more accessibility for the Society and for the public.

Gather artifacts, written materials and
pictures meaningful to Shorewood history and its people. |

Provide free programs of historical interest
to the public. |

Create exhibits of Shorewood history. |

Issue a quarterly newsletter. |
